Class of Heroes 3 (Q1 2017) | The last PSP game to be released?
With Sony having already releasing the successor to the PSP with the Vita some few years back and with the next generation of handheld gaming just around the corner with the Nintendo Switch, it's amazing to actually see a new PSP game scheduled for 2017.
Class of Heroes 3 released way back in 2010 in Japan. However back in July 2016, Gaijinworks president commented on a 2017 release date on their official forums. What's even more astounding is the fact they're hoping for a digital and physical release of the game overseas! In their post they mention that this would be their last physical release which is causing some delays. Despite not hearing anything in a while, their website still confirms a release date is coming for the title.
For a console that initially released back in late December 2004 in Japan, it still amazes me that this 12 year old portable will see a new game released. With no current announcements on any other upcoming games for the PSP this is currently looking like the last PSP game to be released. However recent GDC figures show that 0.4% developers confirm development for the PSP and with the same source claiming 3% development of Switch titles in addition to Nintendo stating 80 games are currently in development, some basic math indicates that there is likely to be 8 titles in development for the PSP (one of which being Class of Heores 3). I can not find any other PSP announcement on any websites meaning they're either not ready to be announced or are some obscure Japanese titles that I am most likely never going to find. Some of these development titles may come to fruition in the future, but when it comes to physical and western PSP releases, I think it's pretty much guaranteed at this stage.
So despite being 12 years old, having a successor already be on the market for 5 years and the rapid growth of mobile technology, the PSP hangs on for another year.
