1080p PS3 & Xbox 360 Gaming | Definitive List of Native and Upscaled 1080p Compatible Games

Using two main reliable sources and some research myself, this has become a definitive list of Xbox 360 and PS3 games that run in both upscaled and native 1080p. One of the websites contained a list of PS3 titles that upscaled to 1080p, while the other website documented the list of native rendering resolutions. However the latter has been inactive for a few years and with the help of Eurogamer's Face Off series and other sources such as developer comments and websites, I have compiled and categorised all this information to create a more focused and up-to-date list

PS3 Games

Unlike the Xbox 360 the PS3 doesn't have an upscaler chip and is most likely why you see a more diverse range of native resolutions. Sony was pushing 1080p hard during the early days of the PS3 and is why you see earlier titles be more ambitious in terms of resolutions.

Xbox 360

The Xbox 360 saw less native 1080p and sub 1080p games than the PS3 due to it having an on-board upscaler chip that would do a pretty damn good job of outputting your games nicely in 1080p. Because of this I think developers were less willing to run native 1080p titles and instead preferred 720p upscaled.

PS3 Demo Disc Collection | List of games contained that are no longer obtainable.

The Official Playstation magazine (OPM) was the only PS3 based magazine that handed out game demos through a Blu-Ray disc. Many other magazines couldn't afford to use Blu-Ray such as PSW (Playstation World) and PSM3 and instead decided to use double sided DVD's which they tried to make up for with their list of videos, themes, pictures, save files and more. What makes these demo discs even more interesting is the fact that only the UK and some selected European countries (from my knowledge) were the only ones to have access to these demo discs from their regional official magazine. Finding any information on what is contained on these discs is impossible due to the limited appeal, regional exclusivity and just a lack of coverage in general.

So it's time to scour through my complete collection of these discs and find out what's on them. Here's the list of games that you will never be able to get access to ever again and which never saw a PC release.

  • The Punisher: No Mercy

Based on Marvels Punisher, this game looks to be a janky multiplayer FPS that got pretty poor reviews all round. Unfortunately the demo is online only and as you would expect, finding a game is impossible in addition to the full game being removed some time ago. Oh well, looks like I didn't miss much anyway.

  • Rampage World Tour
  • Joust
  • Gauntlet 2
  • Championship Sprint
  • Rampart

These are 5 HD renditions of classic games, all of which are timed at 3 minutes aside from Joust which is 1 minute. These games look great at 720p and it's a shame that to achieve this level of sharpness you will have to resort to emulation. Despite these games being released on tons of compilations and having a number of different releases on consoles, this isn't a huge loss, just a shame really.

  • Best of Firstplay: Volume 1

Don't worry if you have no idea what this is. It's a magazine exclusive feature which had a small number of video reviews, previews and a news section. What makes this even remotely interesting is this feature is from 2010 and contains news and pretty screenshots of The Last Guardian and the funny part is, it doesn't look any different!

  • Marvel vs Capcom 2

Marvels HD remaster of the beloved entry in the Marvel vs Capcom series. Unfortunately this is a split-screen only game and with no friends and only 1 controller, I was unable to test it out. You can play this on the original Xbox and Dreamcast, but you'll never achieve the sharp picture quality seen here.

  • Hail to the Chimp

This is a delisted party game that features 2 game modes, 1 map and 4 playable characters. The game has a cell shaded look and an American News program feel to it. Gameplay is fixed on a single screen battle arena where the goal is to collect clams and hit other characters to lose their clams with the game modes complimenting these mechanics. While it did see a physical release in the US, it never did in Europe. Thank god the PS3 is region free though it seems to be rare and quite pricey too.

  • GTI Club Rally Cote D'azur +

Now this is something special. It's an arcade racing game in the vein of Daytona, featuring 1 track, 1 car (an old Golf GTI) and an unlockable cop skin for your car. This is a HD rendition of Konami's Classic GTI Club from 1996 with a silky smooth 60fps, very colourful graphics and great arcade gameplay. Unfortunately this game got delisted years ago, though a different version on PSP is available. With Konami moving on to Pachinko machines and this game likely being a legal nightmare, it's safe to assume we will never be seeing this get re-released ever.

  • Aero-Cross

One very important feature that appears on 2 demo discs is Aero-Cross due to it never being released and ultimately canceled. Originally this was going to be part of Namco's Generations which only saw the releases of Pac-Man Championship Edition DX and Galaga Legions DX. The game is an endless runner with 360 degree movement and one single jump button, regardless it's quite a fun little game. This demo is just one short level but is the only way ever you will be able to play this game, making this a potentially desirable disc in the future.

While this is everything so far, there are a lot more PSN titles on these discs which may get delisted at any moment. With the PS3 starting to die off, the player-base dying, and the costs associate with keeping a game up on there, it's likely these demos are the only way to preserve a limited yet playable version of these games. Now with the slow death of magazines and the disappearance of demo discs entirely for Xbox One and PS4, how will we be able to preserve these digital exclusives once they get removed? Welcome to the digital future!

Class of Heroes 3 (Q1 2017) | The last PSP game to be released?

With Sony having already releasing the successor to the PSP with the Vita some few years back and with the next generation of handheld gaming just around the corner with the Nintendo Switch, it's amazing to actually see a new PSP game scheduled for 2017.

Class of Heroes 3 released way back in 2010 in Japan. However back in July 2016, Gaijinworks president commented on a 2017 release date on their official forums. What's even more astounding is the fact they're hoping for a digital and physical release of the game overseas! In their post they mention that this would be their last physical release which is causing some delays. Despite not hearing anything in a while, their website still confirms a release date is coming for the title.

For a console that initially released back in late December 2004 in Japan, it still amazes me that this 12 year old portable will see a new game released. With no current announcements on any other upcoming games for the PSP this is currently looking like the last PSP game to be released. However recent GDC figures show that 0.4% developers confirm development for the PSP and with the same source claiming 3% development of Switch titles in addition to Nintendo stating 80 games are currently in development, some basic math indicates that there is likely to be 8 titles in development for the PSP (one of which being Class of Heores 3). I can not find any other PSP announcement on any websites meaning they're either not ready to be announced or are some obscure Japanese titles that I am most likely never going to find. Some of these development titles may come to fruition in the future, but when it comes to physical and western PSP releases, I think it's pretty much guaranteed at this stage.

So despite being 12 years old, having a successor already be on the market for 5 years and the rapid growth of mobile technology, the PSP hangs on for another year.

Definitive Collection of Upcoming PS3 & Xbox 360 Games for 2017 | This may be the end...

With 2017 underway, the upcoming release schedule for the PS3 and Xbox 360 is looking barren. While last gen saw a small selection of releases last year, 2017 is looking like it may be the end for the PS3 and especially for the Xbox 360. Here is a small list of games you can look forward to on last gen consoles...

*Digital Releases

Upcoming Releases | PS3
  • Winning Post 8 (March 2nd)
  • Persona 5 (April 4th)
  • *Space Overlords (Q1 2017 - Already out on PS4/Vita)
  • *Forgotten Memories (TBA 2017)
  • *Rainbow Skies (TBA 2017)
  • *Asdivine Hearts (Q1 2017)

Upcoming Releases | Multi-platform
  • Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series (TBA 2017)
  • FIFA/Madden/NBA 2018 (Unconfirmed, likely by previous statement)

And that's it! There may be a new announcement here and there, but don't hold your breath. With EA stating back in 2013 that they would support last gen through 2017 at the latest, we may not even see EA's next iteration of sports games in 2018. Nevertheless there's still a small list of excellent games still upcoming and despite all signs pointing to this being the last year of support, you can't deny that the PS3 and Xbox 360 have had a hell of a run.

Note: Let me just note that actually finding a comprehensive list of upcoming titles was very difficult, many major retailers and gaming sites have long ditched support or acknowledgement of last gen. After a lot of digging, this is all the games I could find, so there may be some I may have missed but these seems unlikely given the general lack of support anyway.
